Calumet County officials are alerting residents and businesses of a circulating fraudulent invoice scam. Residents in our community have reported receiving fake invoices falsely claiming to be from the Calumet County Planning and Zoning Department and requesting immediate payment.
These invoices may appear official and prompt recipients to pay an invoice via wire transfer. The letter mimics official correspondence and may even use names of actual employees or refer to planning or zoning-related services to appear legitimate.
Other counties within Wisconsin have been reporting similar scams, including fraudulent invoices being sent to their residents, as well.
Red Flags to Watch For:
- Email Address: Legitimate communications from Calumet County will end with @calumetcounty.org.
- Payment Pressure: Urgent requests for prompt payment, especially via wire transfer, should raise suspicion.
Action Steps:
- Verification: Verify the legitimacy of any invoice before making payments.
- Contact Us: If you receive such an invoice or a suspicious email:
- Do not provide personal information or make payments.
- Contact Calumet County Planning, Zoning and Land Information Department.
